Creating A Healthy, Organic Lawn Without Using Pesticides Or Other Chemicals

Blog

While it may feel easier to simply put chemicals on your lawn four times a year to have a lush, green landscape, you can create a healthy lawn without the use of harsh chemicals. If your existing lawn is not organic, you will need to take some time to improve the health of the soil. You can restore the grass to a natural state using organic fertilizer and other techniques. Your lawn will become strong, vibrant, and be able to suppress weeds and pests while at the same time being pesticide free.

Start by Thickening Your Lawn

When healthy grass seed is growing, it's much harder for weeds to take root. Find a hardy grass seed that is recommended for your area, and spread the grass seed over an existing lawn. If you have extremely shady areas of your lawn, consider planting ground cover in these areas instead. It's difficult to grow thick grass in shady areas. Grass that isn't hindered by weeds is able to grow a strong, deep root system that helps your lawn get the nutrients it needs from the soil more readily.

Use Compost on Your Lawn to Provide Nutrients

Compost is all organic matter, it can be used to feed your lawn and give the soil the nutrients it needs to create a vibrant lawn. To spread compost on areas less than two thousand square feet, simply place small piles of compost throughout your lawn and rake the compost over the existing grass. If your lawn is larger, use a spreader to get the compost evenly placed throughout the yard. To get organic fertilizer for your grass, consider contacting companies like Nature Safe.

Water Your Lawn Less

When you don't saturate your lawn with water, you allow your lawn to grow deeper, stronger roots. While you can get a green lawn quickly by watering often, this creates a lawn that becomes dependent on frequent watering. Your grass roots won't go deep into the soil, as they won't need to in order to get water.

Cut Your Grass Higher

You should be cutting your grass to a height of 1/2 of an inch to 3 inches, depending on the type of grass you want to grow. Cutting the grass too low results in stress on your lawn. Leave the clippings on your lawn after mowing for added protection.

With organic fertilizers for grass on the market today, you can spread fertilizer on your lawn to help it grow even stronger while maintaining a healthy, organic lawn.
